New Palm OS Application Enables Handheld Devices to Access Shared Directories on Windows, Macintosh and Unix Computers

SAN JOSE, Calif. February 10, 2004 — At the PalmSource Developer Conference, Hands High Software, Inc. today announced the new WiFile software solution for Palm Powered™ handhelds and smartphones. WiFile is the first Palm OS® product available that enables educators, corporations, and consumers to directly connect to Windows shared directories using the native networking protocol of Windows computers. With WiFile and a Palm Powered™ device that is connected to a local area network or the Internet, users can directly access Applications, databases, Word documents, Excel spreadsheets, PowerPoint presentations, MP3 music files, JPEG pictures, and more, all located on their personal computers or corporate servers.

For example, students using WiFile and a Dana Wireless from AlphaSmart can access their student account on the school network to download assignments. A corporate user with WiFile and a Tungsten C by palmOne can wirelessly access spreadsheets that are on his or her personal computer in the office. And after a hard day at work, a Sony CLIÉ UX50 owner can relax on the sofa and wirelessly listen to MP3 music files, straight from a home computer without having to go to the computer nor synchronize.

WiFile, as opposed to other file sharing solutions, requires no additional setup by network administrators. Since WiFile speaks SMB/CIFS, the native networking language of Windows, any file that is accessible by a Windows computer over a network is also accessible by WiFile. In addition, since Mac OS X includes SMB networking through its Windows File Sharing capability, WiFile can also access files on a Macintosh computer. Unix directories are also accessible when they are shared with the open-source Samba networking software for Unix.

While WiFile will work with any network connected Palm Powered device, most users will connect to a local network wirelessly using a WiFi (802.11) or Bluetooth enabled device. These devices can connect to the network through a wireless access point, or through a wireless card installed in a laptop or desktop computer.

"WiFile opens up a whole new world of possibilities to students, teachers, corporations and consumers", said Shannon Pekary, president of Hands High Software. "For the first time, people can directly access their corporate or school accounts, and home computers, from a Palm Powered device. No more hassling with HotSync®."

"WiFile further extends the reach of the Palm OS" said Larry Berkin, director of developer marketing, PalmSource, Inc. "With its unique abilities to directly open files that are located on networked computers, WiFile gives Palm Powered device users new, simplified access to personal files and corporate information."

Palm OS is known for the power and flexibility of its sophisticated, easy-to-use interface. As the foundation for more than appromximately 30 million mobile devices, Palm OS platform provides an open, modular architecture that allows licensees including Aceeca, AlphaSmart, Fossil, Foundertech, Garmin, GSL, Handspring, HuneTec, Kyocera, Legend, palmOne, PerComm, Samsung, Sony, Symbol and Tapwave as well as Palm OS Ready Partners including ATI, Intel, MediaQ, Motorola, M-Systems, Samsung Semiconductor and Texas Instruments to create innovative products in a variety of sizes and form factors for both individuals and enterprise users.

WiFile is scheduled to be available by the end of March, 2004. It will be available for $29.95 from the Hands High Software web site at www.handshigh.com, as well as leading online resellers of Palm OS software.
